Frequently Asked Questions
A few things people usually want to know before they call. If yours isn't here, ask on the phone.
-
Mostly we talk. I'll ask what brought you in, what you've already tried, and what you want to be different. You'll get a sense of how I work and whether it feels like a fit. You don't need to prepare anything. Sessions run 50 minutes, and I'm currently accepting new clients — usually within a week or two of your call.
-
You don't need a crisis to justify calling. Most people who come to me aren't in an emergency; they're tired of feeling stuck in the same pattern and want something to change. If it's been bothering you long enough that you're reading this page, that's reason enough. A short call will tell us both whether it's worth going further.

I'm licensed in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, so I can work with you by telehealth if you're located in any of the three. My office is in Bloomington if you'd rather meet in person.
-
I draw on several approaches rather than running everyone through one method — attachment-based and emotionally focused work, CBT, psychodynamic and relational work, and trauma-focused therapy. Which of those is useful depends on you and what you're stuck in.
-
Sometimes it's the fit, sometimes it's the timing, sometimes the work never got to what was actually keeping you stuck. It's worth telling me what happened and what you wanted that you didn't get. I can't promise a different result, but I can tell you honestly whether what you're describing is something I'd work with differently.
-
Most people start weekly, which is what builds momentum early on. From there it depends on what you're working on — some people come for a few months to work through one specific thing, others stay longer. Frequency can change as things improve. You're not committing to anything indefinite.
-
What you say in session stays there, with a small number of legal exceptions, like situations involving immediate danger, or the safety of a child or vulnerable adult. Aside from the legal exceptions, none of your information goes to anyone else without your written permission. If I bill your insurance, they require a diagnosis and it becomes part of your health record. If you'd rather insurance not be involved, you can pay privately instead.
-
Things come up. If you let me know at least one business day ahead of time, there's no charge. Later than that, or a missed session without notice, is billed at $125, because the time was held for you. If something genuinely urgent happens, tell me and we'll sort it out.
Whether this is your first time in therapy or not, the question is the same: is this the right fit? A short conversation will usually help you and me decide.
