Individual and couples therapy in Bloomington, and by telehealth across Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Individual therapy

Most people come in because something has stopped moving. The anxiety that used to be manageable isn't. A low stretch has gone on longer than it should. Something that happened years ago is still shaping decisions you make now.

We start by getting clear on what's actually keeping you stuck — which is often not the thing you came in to talk about. From there we work on it directly.

Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly to start. How long the whole thing takes depends on what you're working on, and we'll talk about it openly rather than leaving it vague.

Couples therapy

Couples usually arrive at one of two points: something specific has happened, or the same argument has been running for years and neither of you can find the exit.

Either way, the work is the same at bottom — understanding what each of you is actually reaching for underneath the fight, and building a way to talk about it that doesn't end where it always ends.

There may be moments where I challenge one of you more then the other. When that happens, it comes from a place of care and respect, with the goal of increasing understanding, accountability, and connection - not taking sides against either of you. I work with both of you.

How the work actually goes

I tailor my approach to the people sitting in front of me, drawing from different methods as needed.

Sometimes that's cognitive behavioral work — noticing the thought patterns that keep a feeling in place, and testing them. Sometimes it's attachment-based or emotionally focused work, where the useful question is what you learned early on about what closeness costs. With trauma, the work is slower and more careful, and the goal is to make the past stop functioning like the present.

Underneath all of it is a relational, psychodynamic thread: what's happening between us in the room usually tells us something true about what's happening elsewhere in your life.

And it's strength-based. You've handled hard things before. Part of this is finding what already works and doing more of it.

I'm in network with most major insurers and bill them directly, so in most cases you only pay a copay after your deductible has been met. Check the list below, and if you don't see your plan, call and ask your insurance company or me — coverage changes and it's worth confirming.

A sliding scale may be available. It's a normal conversation. If the fee is the thing standing between you and starting therapy, please mention it during the consultation call. We can have an open conversation about weather a sliding scale option is available.
